Have you made your list yet? “Bucket List,” the movie starring Jack Nicholson, revolves around the relationship between two ill men who share a hospital room. They collaborate on a list of things they want to do before they “kick the bucket.”
The term “bucket list” has become my new cliché when I am about to do something memorable — like when I flew in an experimental aerobatic airplane a few weeks ago. I’m up for anything new as long as it has a high excitement factor and doesn’t interfere with my values, ethics or integrity — which pretty much eliminates anything a drunken college freshman might do.
For me, excitement usually trumps fear. But as the engine roared and the plane began to lift, my grip tightened and I became uncharacteristically quiet. Anxiety settled in around that part of my brain that refuses to figure out how mechanical things operate, leaving me vulnerable to navigate big heavy machinery through space.
Ha, I thought. I will conquer this. Airplanes fly every day, all day long, all over the big blue sky. My only request was that the plane fly in a straight line — no dipping of the wings or sudden bumping, please.
