My daughter is getting married, my son is graduating from high school and I’ve become a groupie — to Storm Large. It doesn’t take much to see the irony. I was raised to act demure, small and quiet — the opposite of stormy or large.
Storm Large’s autobiographical play, “Crazy Enough,” running now through June 7 at Portland Center Stage, is bawdy, loud, real, naughty and raw. It is not for the faint of heart. Sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll form the backdrop for the Portland singer’s struggle to find her footing, question her sanity and learn life lessons the hard way.
I saw the show the first time with my friend Jen. I went a second time with a first date. “You’re going to that play with a guy you don’t even know? Are you aware of the language she uses?” another friend scolded, pointing her finger at me. Call me crazy.
After years of saying yes when my head screamed no, and saying no when I craved to say hell yes, there seems to be an unraveling at the seams of the well-trained sensible and restrained me.
It’s not an all-out rebellion, but more like the cell door I’ve been gnawing at has finally sprung. I’m tripping through it with my pent-up desires for a life without walls and windows without shutters — perfect timing to be seduced by Storm’s real-life adventures.
